
ISSP Nakagawara Awards
The International Symposium on Sputtering and Plasma Processes (ISSP) is pleased to announce the establishment of the ISSP Nakagawara Awards, made possible through a generous donation from
Dr. Osamu Nakagawara. This award has been established to recognize and encourage outstanding contributions by researchers and students in the field of sputtering and plasma processes. Through this award, ISSP aims to further promote scientific exchange, support the next generation of researchers, and contribute to the continued development of the sputtering and plasma process community.
Dr. Nakagawara has been closely involved with ISSP through his presentations and activities as a committee member. His generous contribution reflects his deep appreciation for the role that ISSP has played in his own growth as a researcher, as well as his strong wish to support the future development of the symposium.
The ISSP Committee sincerely appreciates Dr. Nakagawara’s generous support and is honored to establish this award in recognition of his contribution to the ISSP community.

Award Eligibility and Selection
- Best Paper Award
The Best Paper Award are intended to honor and encourage young researchers whose academic achievements and current research demonstrate a high level of excellence and distinction.
Eligible candidates must be under 45 years of age and/or within 15 years after receiving their Ph.D. degree. Periods related to major life events, such as parental leave, childcare, family care, or other comparable circumstances, may be excluded from the calculation of eligibility, where applicable.
- Student Awards
The Student Awards are intended to honor and encourage undergraduate and graduate students whose research achievements and presentations demonstrate a high level of excellence and distinction.
For the Student Awards, the evaluation will be conducted based on poster presentations.
- Selection Process
Award candidates will be evaluated by the ISSP Award Committee based on the quality of their research and presentation. The selection process will be conducted using common evaluation criteria for both the Best Paper Awards and the Best Student Awards.
The evaluation criteria are as follows:

Content: Quality, originality, and significance of the research.

Organization: Clarity of the presentation structure, including the purpose, logical flow, and summary of the work.

Delivery: Confidence, understanding of the topic, clarity of explanation, and responses to questions.
The final awardees will be selected by the ISSP Award Committee based on the evaluation results.
Award Prizes
Awardees will receive a certificate and a monetary prize in recognition of their outstanding research achievements and presentations.

Best Paper Award: JPY 50,000

Best Student Awards: JPY 30,000 each, for up to 3 awardees
The monetary prizes are made possible through the generous contribution of Dr. Osamu Nakagawara, with the aim of encouraging young researchers and students and supporting the continued development of the ISSP community.
